LET’S MAKE YOUTH POLYTECHNIC EDUCATION “SEXY” IN 2015 AND BEYOND

.

When some of last year’s top KCPE performers were asked about their future, each of them said they want to join top schools and eventually become engineers, neuro-surgeons etc, etc. None of them said they wanted to own a hospital, an engineering firm or be Africa’s Bill Gates. That should tell you how deep-rooted the culture of wage employment is among our youth. Late last year I trained over 2000 Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) teachers in Bungoma County on how to inculcate an entrepreneurial culture in our pre-school kids and the story is the same. Government officials, politicians, policy makers, teachers, parents, religious leaders, the community, all of us (even the media) seem to believe that climbing the formal academic ladder is the only sure avenue for preparing ourselves for good employment openings and good living. This is stereotype. The world has many billionaires who never went to college.  Michael Dell and Mark Zuckerberg of facebook do not hold university degrees. Kenya’s Njenga Karume and Gerishom Kirima died billionaires without university degrees. Western Kenya’s millionaires Ibrahim Ambwere and Mama Haris have excelled in life and business without an MBA.

Will Kenya automatically become an economically better place to live in come September this year? When I heard the announcement I remembered jokes told about economists, econometricians and statisticians. An economist has been defined as a trained professional paid to guess wrong about the economy. He is also said to be dangerously armed with an invisible hand given to him by Adam Smith. An econometrician is defined as someone who will tell you only tomorrow why what he predicted yesterday did not happen today.
